How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic appliances are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or bonded to the teeth as brackets. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to the proper position.

Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can now choose clear or metal brackets and, in some cases, the color of your appliance. Wires are far less noticeable, and the latest materials are designed to move teeth faster with more comfort. Today, any age is a great age to wear braces!

Duration of Treatment

Orthodontic Treatment time varies and can last between one and two years, depending on several factors including age, treatment method, and how minor or severe your case is. A big factor in a successful treatment is YOU! The more involved and diligent you are, the more efficient your treatment will be. For children, receiving interceptive or early treatment can also help provide a quicker treatment time. YOU! The more involved and diligent you are, the more efficient your treatment will be. Before beginning your orthodontic care, your doctor will discuss all of your options and provide an estimate for how long your full treatment may take. Please contact our practice to schedule an appointment and learn more about orthodontics and the treatments we provide.

Your Initial Visit

At the initial examination, Dr. Krishna Prasad will meet with you to determine your orthodontic needs, timing of treatment and estimated cost. The initial exam includes diagnosis and individualized treatment planning and a comprehensive breakdown of your insurance coverage. We offer interest-free, flexible payment options.

The first step in determining your treatment plan is learning as much about your orthodontic condition as possible. This involves making a set of records in our office which may include plaster models of your teeth, panoramic and cephalometric x-rays, and diagnostic photographs. Dr. Krishna will analyze these records to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Before orthodontic treatment begins, your dental care and cleaning should be current. Throughout the course of orthodontic treatment, you will be expected to continue to see your family dentist for regular six-month checkups and routine dental care to help ensure the best possible result from your orthodontic treatment.

Excellent orthodontic treatment results are attained with cooperative, informed and committed patients and parents. Successful orthodontic treatment is a team effort: patients, parents, the orthodontist, and the specially trained members of our staff working together.

The rewards? Your radiant smile, your healthy teeth, and your glow of new self-confidence.

ORTHODONTICS FOR CHILDREN

Early intervention of oral habits and developmental problems can make orthodontic treatment easier and the end result more ideal. Some jaw growth discrepancies and dental crowding should be managed early. Other problems are better solved after most of the permanent teeth erupt. It is important that an orthodontist evaluate a growing child to determine their orthodontic needs and the best timing of treatment. treatment options include stainless steel or clear (esthetic) braces, Invisalign or removable appliance therapy.

EARLY INTERCEPTIVE TREATMENT

Problems that are best treated early before the permanent teeth erupt include uneven jaw growth, oral habits, severe crowding and eruption problems. Orthodontists are often able to guide the pattern of jaw growth. Young patients that have interceptive treatment may benefit from additional treatment after the remaining permanent teeth erupt. Treatment options of removable /fixed Functiona l appliances may be considered at this stage.

ORTHODONTICS FOR ADULTS

Adult treatment is recommended for improving both the esthetics of your smile and the function of the bite. As long as the teeth and supporting bone are healthy, orthodontic treatment can be done at any age. The goal is to create and maintain a healthy dentition throughout your life. Adults may have treatment options including stainless steel or clear (esthetic) braces, Invisalign or removable appliance therapy.

Patients that wish to avoid wearing traditional fixed braces may be candidates for Invisalign treatment in Abu Dhabi . Invisalign uses a series of clear flexible trays (aligners) to move the teeth in small increments. This type of treatment is indicated for more minor tooth movements.

REMOVABLE APPLIANCE THERAPY

Another option for limited treatment of more minor alignment or spacing issues is using removable retainer- type appliances to shift the teeth into an improved position. For those patients that wish to avoid wearing fixed braces, removable appliance therapy may be an option to improve the smile and bite.

SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS

In some cases when the bite is uneven, jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) may be indicated to achieve ideal esthetics and function. The orthodontist works closely with a Maxillofacial Surgeon to achieve an ideal occlusion. The orthodontist uses fixed braces to align the teeth and prepare the jaws for surgical correction. This team approach is necessary to create an ideal bite, facial balance and smile. Surgical treatment is generally indicated after a patient’s growth is complete.

CLEFT PALATE TREATMENT

Certain complex cases, including patients born with a cleft lip and palate, can be treated with orthodontics to improve the jaw growth and function. Careful planning and coordination of orthodontic treatment with surgical procedures is necessary to achieve correction in these complex cases.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities.

Who is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Your orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile.

What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist?

If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be a great age to see the orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens, with about one in every five orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you’re considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to visit the orthodontist.

How can I take care of my teeth if I’m wearing braces or a retainer?

  • ALWAYS remember to brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day.
  • Make sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride, and ask your orthodontist or family dentist if you need a fluoride rinse. This will help prevent cavities!
  • During your treatment, try to avoid foods with a lot of sugar, which increases the amount of bacteria that grows in your mouth, causing more plaque and possibly cavities.
  • Avoid sticky and chewy foods (caramel, chewing gum, gummy bears), hard foods (hard candy, nuts, ice cubes), or any foods that could possibly get stuck in your braces (corn on the cob, soft bagels, ribs, taffy, etc.).
  • If you take out your retainer to eat, make sure you brush your teeth, floss, and remember to keep it safe in its container so that it does not get lost or broken.
  • Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.
  • Be sure to schedule your routine checkups with your family dentist. It is recommended that you continue to visit the dentist every six months.

What are braces?

Braces are used by your orthodontist to help you improve the look and feel of your smile. There are several different types of braces to choose from, including:

  • Clear braces
  •  Ceramic braces
  • Lingual braces
  • Self-ligating braces
  • Invisible braces
  • Traditional metal braces

If I get braces, how long do I have to wear them?

The amount of time spent in braces will vary depending on the individual patient because every smile responds differently to a treatment. Treatment times can take anywhere between six and 30 months, but most standard treatments take about 22 months.

Do braces hurt?

Braces do not often hurt though you may feel a small amount of discomfort for a couple of days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth get used to your new braces.

Do I need to brush my teeth more often if I have braces?

With braces, you should brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy and clean. Brushing regularly will help remove any food that may be caught between the braces. You should also floss daily to get in between your braces where your brush isn’t able to reach. Your orthodontist can show you how to properly brush and floss once your braces are placed.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Yes! In fact, it’s even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush can’t reach. This causes bacteria to build-up that can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with your orthodontist to make sure that your teeth stay clean and healthy while wearing braces.

Will my braces interfere with my school activities like sports, playing an instrument, or singing?

Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment when you first get your braces, but wearing braces will not stop you from participating in any of your school activities. If you play a contact sport, it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance.
